LOOKING INTO EAST - LOOKING INTO WEST
Musical journey into music that inspired western and eastern composers.
From the beginning of civilization, people tried to conquer other nations to extend its power, territories and protect trade routes for economic reasons.
In ancient times it was Alexander The Great and Julius Cesar conquering the East and Genghis Khan and Attila The Hun, the West.
In more recent times we had the British Empire and the Ottoman Empire expanding both directions!
We cannot forget a peaceful exploration by thousands of explorers like Ibn Battuta or Marco Polo (just mention a few) who's Expeditions between 1271 and 1298 resulted in the book “Travels of Marco Polo” which created interest in the Far East.
The side effect of all those conquests was the exposure to different cultures, effecting architecture, arts, fashion, and of course music with its creation of new instruments. Many medieval instruments as well as music originating in the Middle East was brought back home to Europe by the crusaders.
This week's edition of Classical Discoveries will focus on these influences.
Included will be works by Western, Middle and Far Eastern Composers and compositions that inspired them.
Some works presented on this program will include the unusual combinations of eastern and western musicians, ensembles and orchestras.
This subject will be expanded to this summer’s last edition of Treasures of Early Music that will air on September 9, 2016

FOR JAPAN
This Special Edition of Classical Discoveries and Classical Discoveries Goes Avant-Garde is devoted to music by Japanese composers.
This is Classical Discoveries tribute, in the face of the triple tragedy, to the people of Japan, living and perished, it's artists and composers.
The host of this program is hoping that listening to the program "For Japan" and hearing this incredible, little known music, will touch and inspire those who have not contributed anything yet, or might wish to contribute more, or simply just help people appreciate the music contribution given to the world by Japanese artists.

"THE LAND OF FIRE" - Musical Voyage to Azerbaijan
AZERBAIJAN is a country that most people don't generally associate with classical music; however,
the country has a classical music tradition dating back nearly a century to the early 1900s when Baku, its capital, produced more than 50 percent of the world's oil supply.
Located on the Caspian Sea, south of Russia and east of Turkey, north of Iran, Azerbaijan sits at the crossroads of East and West. And its music is the synthesis of these two great traditions.
Often the melodic line and instrumentation are Eastern while genre and orchestration are Western. An unforgettable blend.
In late 1991, Azerbaijan gained its independence with the collapse of the Soviet Union. Today, gradually, their great music is becoming known throughout the world as it justly deserves to be.
Music schools flourished during the Soviet period and composers created and today are still creating music in numerous styles including those from the West.
The first opera of the Muslim world was composed in Azerbaijan almost a hundred years ago by the Azerbaijani composer, Uzeyir Hajibeyov.
He is known as the Father of Composed Music because he insisted that music could be written down and orchestrated, rather than just improvised.
The first piece - Koroghlu - Son of Blind Man , was performed in 1938 in Moscow in the presence
of Stalin who awarded it the highest accolades of the nation. Some suggest that the piece may have even saved Hajibeyov's life because he had been involved with the movement
for independence before the Bolsheviks took over the country in 1920. And those years - especially the late 1930s were so infamous for Stalin's repression.
Today's program introduces some of the finest examples of Azerbaijani music and the contribution their composers have made to world cultural heritage.

FOCUS ON " MIDDLE- EASTERN CLASSICAL COMPOSERS"
Despite the fact that we hear much about the Middle-Eastern countries every
day on the news, many of us are not aware of the existance of conservatories,
concert halls and composers of classical music. Many musicians of these countries are
fascinated with western culture and music and employ its influences within their national
heritage.
Today's program presented a number of unknown Middle-Eastern composers
that combined western traditions with their own ethnic experience and heritage.
